The New Year is upon us and already there is a lot of activity in the organisation of this years Steam Fair. As the number of entries are rising year upon year, we have had to take the decision to add another field to the Show Site.
This will allow us a lot more scope for the Working demonstrations and the Heavy Haulage section.
Boxing and Wrestling.
One of the major attractions at this years show, especially for the lovers of the old time fairgrounds, will be the late Ron Taylor’s “Excelsior” Boxing and Wrestling Booth.
This famous fairground attraction is the last of it’s kind still traveling, although only making special appearances.
The Booth was founded in 1861 by Rons Great Grandfather and has appeared regularly at all the big fairs including Nottingham Goose Fair.
Steam Ploughing.
For the first time, we will be having Steam ploughing demonstrations.
This is a demonstration that we have wanted to have at the Fair for a number of years but lack of space has been a problem. With the addition of the extra field we will be able to have a vintage crop cutting demo, followed by the Steam Ploughs.
The corn will then be taken to the threshing drum for the next demo. We already have a number of new Steam exhibits booked in for this years show, details of which will be published later.
PUBLIC CAMP SITE
We are pleased to be able to provide a Public Camp site for this years show.

Paignton Regatta

Paignton Regatta is now in it's 161st year, and the current organisers are acutely aware of the traditions they carry with them.
Every summer the regatta week provides a focus for the people of Paignton to turn out and compete, support or just enjoy. It also gives us a chance to welcome our holiday visitors and invite them to enjoy some old-fashioned seaside fun, albeit with a 21st Century twist.
Many events are fairly new to Paignton Regatta. Free music on a stage constructed on the Green, a dog show and a Songs of Praise evening to finish of the week in style were all very successful additions to previous year's programmes.
But that doesn't mean the old favourites have been forgotten, such as rowing, atheltics, fireworks, the massively popular Veedubbing car festival and of course the fun-packed fairground.
Paignton Regatta is not solely based on water sports like many other regatta's, there are also a large number of land based events. Therefore, every effort has been made to include something for everyone in this years programme of events, and we are sure locals and visitors alike, will find plenty to amuse, thrill and entertain during the course of the week.
Most of the events take place right on the Green, right in the heart of the seafront, but others are dotted around the town.
If in doubt look out for the regatta committee members in the bright yellow shirts and ask. We will all be pleased to help.

Another fairly new event for the Paignton Regatta programme is the Round the Pier Swim.
The swim will do exactly as the title suggests, taking entrants out from the beach, around the pier, and back to the sands again.
There will be a number of awards for ladies and men. Prime of them will be the Paignton Pier Trophy going to the first person to complete the course.
The race will start with all competitors leaning back on the sea wall. All competitors will wear one piece costumes. Goggles and a head cover are allowed. No flippers, dry or wet suits are permitted.
All those taking part will already have demonstrated their swimming ability by completing two lengths of the pool at the Torbay Leisure Centre.

Rowers from the Teign club enjoyed a clean sweep as the sport of Gig Racing made its debut in Torbay two years ago as part of the Paignton Regatta races.
The regatta hosted the Bay's first night of racing, with five of the sleek £20,000 gigs taking part in races for men's, ladies and mixed crews.
The ladies were the first on the water, with crowds on the sea-front enjoying the evening sunshine and being kept up to date with the racing by a commentator out on the water.
Teign won the ladies' race over an out-and-back course from the beach out into the middle of the bay, from the two Dartmouth crews, the second Teign crew and Paignton, rowing a gig for the first time and using a craft borrowed from the same club.
The men's race over the same course produced a one-two for Teign, with Dartmouth third and fourth, and the Paginton novices a battling fifth. A closely-fought mixed race once again saw two Teigns ahead of two Dartmouths and Paignton. The Teign and Dartmouth crews demonstrated the sporting spirit of the event by giving the newcomers from Paignton three cheers as they crossed the finishing line.

Torbay Week Combined Regatta

The four sailing clubs of Torbay, Babbacombe Corinthian Sailing Club, Brixham Yacht Club, Paignton Sailing Club and The Royal Torquay Yacht Club have been meeting to finalise the details of this combined Regatta between Friday August 22nd and Wednesday 27th August 2008 and it will include National Championships for the Tasars, Buzz, ISO and 505 fleets.

Torbay Week is an exciting NEW event replacing the three existing Torbay regattas (Torquay, Brixham and Paignton). That means lots of good racing for a wide variety of sailing vessels, along with tons of after-sail fun at Torbay's sailing and yachting clubs.
There'll be plenty of shorebased excitement for visitors and spectators too! The setting couldn't be better either, with the large, sheltered bay providing fantastic sailing conditions in a climate that is noted as being much warmer than the rest of the UK. Its horseshoe shape means lots of close-up spectating opportunities too.
